Leach Field Repair in Central New York

When your leach field is failing, you usually know within hours: sewage backing up indoors, soggy ground over the field, or a county health notice. Backwell handles field restoration, full replacement, and mound system conversions across CNY. Same week site visits on active failures. Call (315) 400-2654.

A failing leach field is a problem on a hard deadline. NYSDOH and county health departments treat surface effluent as a public health hazard, and an active failure can result in a use restriction on the property until the system is repaired or replaced. Backwell handles leach field work across CNY: diagnostic, restoration, full replacement, and mound conversions when site conditions force the change.

Signs Your Leach Field Is Failing

Repair Options

Field Restoration

If the system is structurally intact but the soil has become clogged with biomat (the bacterial layer that forms at the soil interface), restoration can sometimes recover the field. Methods include high pressure jetting of the laterals, soil fracturing, terralift treatment, and aggressive pumping cycles. Restoration only works on systems where the underlying soil can still accept effluent. Most failed CNY fields end up needing replacement.

Full Leach Field Replacement

The most common fix in CNY. The existing field is excavated and removed, soil is evaluated for a new design, and a replacement system is installed. Replacement cost depends on field type and size:

Field Type Typical Cost
Conventional gravity field (3 bed)$8,000 to $14,000
Pressure distribution field$11,000 to $18,000
Raised sand mound$16,000 to $28,000
Chamber field (Infiltrator or equivalent)$9,000 to $16,000
Add: new septic tank if needed$3,500 to $6,500

Mound Conversion

When the original system failed because of high seasonal groundwater or shallow bedrock, a conventional in ground replacement will fail for the same reason. County health departments will usually require a mound system in those cases. Mound conversions cost more (raised sand fill, larger footprint, dosing pump and pressure manifold), but they are the only design that solves a high water table problem.

Process

Step 1: Site Visit and Diagnostic

We inspect the field, pull the tank lid, observe inlet and outlet flows, probe the soil over the field, and check for surfacing. From there we can usually tell whether you need restoration, replacement, or a full redesign.

Step 2: Soil Evaluation

If replacement is needed, we coordinate a deep hole test and perc test with a NYSDOH licensed designer. The soil dictates what kind of field you can install. Some lots in CNY (heavy clay, shallow bedrock, high groundwater) will not support a conventional gravity field.

Step 3: Health Department Approval

We submit the proposed design to the county health department for approval. Most CNY counties (Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Oneida, Cayuga) have a 2 to 4 week review timeline. Faster on documented failures.

Step 4: Installation

Once approved, installation typically takes 2 to 5 days depending on field type. We excavate, install distribution piping or chambers, set the tank if replacing, backfill, and restore the surface.

Step 5: Inspection and Sign Off

County health inspector inspects the open installation before backfill. Final paperwork issued after backfill and surface restoration.

Emergency Response

If your system is in active failure (sewage backup, surface effluent), the property may be uninhabitable until the system is fixed or pumped on a regular schedule. We prioritize active failures for same week site visits and can usually have a temporary pump and haul arrangement set up while a replacement is being designed and permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my leach field is failing?

Most failures show up as slow drains, sewage backups, or wet ground over the field. If the system is more than 25 years old and you are seeing any of these, the field is the most likely cause. A site visit confirms it.

Can a failed leach field be saved without replacement?

Sometimes. If the system is structurally intact and the failure is biomat clogging in salvageable soil, restoration techniques can work. In most CNY soil conditions, full replacement is the durable answer.

How fast can you replace a failed field?

Site visit within a week. Soil testing and design takes 1 to 2 weeks. County health approval is another 2 to 4 weeks. Installation 2 to 5 days. Total: usually 4 to 8 weeks from your first call to a working new system.

Does insurance cover leach field replacement?

Standard homeowner insurance does not cover wear and tear failures. Some policies cover damage from specific events (tree root intrusion if listed, sudden ground movement). Check your policy.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Every leach field replacement in NY requires county health department approval. Backwell handles the design coordination and the permit application as part of standard scope.
